The card is used for identification purposes and it also serves as a travel document within the European Union.
The identity card is made of polycarbonate and it bears the individual’s name, surname, date of birth, gender, place of birth, photograph and signature. The back of the card contains the individual’s Maltese personal ID number, which is also their social security number. The front side of the card has a unique 10-digit code printed on it, which is used to identify the holder when using e-government services.
The Maltese Identity Card can be used as a travel document within the European Union. It allows the holder to cross borders without having to go through passport control. However, outside of the EU, the card is not valid as a travel document and holders will need to use their passport instead.
